When I lived in Provo there was a girl named Kelly in my ward. We found out that we were both going to the same city in Ecuador at the same time. She was going to teach English for nine months and I was volunteering in the orphanages for three months. We became really good friends.
One day when she was teaching sunday school in our ward in Ecuador, she told us about her Grandma. She said that her Grandma was one of the most generous and kind people that she had ever known. She was full of pure, radiating love for everyone. Kelly said that it was a love that you could feel when you walked in the room. She then went on to tell me that the reason that she thought her grandma had so much love to give was because she was so close to God.
It makes sense. The bible says, “God is love” (1 John 4:16) “and he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God, and God in Him”. The closer that we get to God, the more love we feel and the more love we will feel for His children. So, “Let us love one another: for love is of God, and everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth Him . . . He that loveth not, knoweth not God: for God is love” (1 John 4:7-8).
God loves us so much that He sent His Son for us so that through Him, we can have eternal life. So, “If God so loved us, we ought also to love one another . . . If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and His love is perfected in us.” (1 John 4)
I love my Father in Heaven. I know that He is real. I feel of His love for me and the closer I get to Him, the more love I feel and my capacity to love others also increases. The opposite in true as well. When I have felt distanced from God through my own actions or lack of action, I find that I have less capacity to love other people and my focus becomes more self-centered.
God’s love for us is perfect and unconditional. We can show our love for Him through keeping the commandments (John 14:15). As we strive to be obedient and diligent in keeping His commandments, we will become closer to God and our lives will be filled with His pure love that will radiate to everyone around us.
